Novak Djokovic fourth round post-match interview (Indian Wells 2017).
Q. You were on a 19 match winning streak and you last lost here in 2013. What does this streak means to you?
Novak Djokovic: The run was amazing. I am very proud of it, obviously. It had to end at some stage. Unfortunately, it was today. Nick, again, as he did in Acapulco earlier, he served so well. Just wasn’t managing to get a lot of balls back on his serve, first and second, as well. So I guess that’s what made a difference. I never had any break points but there were some close games on his serve. In those moments, however, I have not been able to do what I should have.
Q. Is Nick especially tough to play with his energy and demeanor on court, his intensity? Just he can be sort of up and down. Does it makes tougher to play?
Novak Djokovic: It’s his style. There are not many players like him on the tour. He plays a certain way, and talks and behaves a certain way, which is characteristic for him. Obviously, it works.
Q. (On Andy Murray becoming the world number one).
Novak Djokovic: He is someone I respect a lot, for his determination, talent and everything else. He brings so much to the world of tennis and deserves to be number one after so many years of hard work and tennis at the highest level.
Q. You and your wife are public figures, both very active on social networks. Has it ever happened that you run into a negative interaction and how do you handle it?
Novak Djokovic: You know, there always will be someone who will not agree with what you post, with the person you are and the values that you have in life. It’s normal. Not everyone can be on your side. You can not please everyone. My wife and I respect the opinions of everyone and we believe that criticism, if constructive, sometimes they can be useful for us as public figures. We are fortunate to have so many people who follow us and support us. We are grateful. There will be always something negative. But much depends on how we see things and what we take from it.
Q. You have faced many great players over the course of your career, and you’ve just played against Nick for the second time. What do you think of him, what he is capable of?
Novak Djokovic: Undoubtedly he’s capable of a lot of big things. That was projected for him already a couple of years back. He’s not very consistent with his results, but he’s coming closer to the Top 10. He had his best year last year, so things are coming together for him. There is no doubt that he has a big game, and that game that he has can and should be for a Top 10, Top 5 player. So it just depends on him and his commitment to the sport.
